A LITTLE HISTORY
Before the modern agricultural implements, farmers' work was very hard; ploughing the land meant working only by one's own exertions and exploiting the muscular strength of the animals. Farmers used inefficient tools, which, at the same time made the land produce a little bit.
Besides
The famous Sassi, Matera is known for his delicious bread as well as and,
together with Altamura bread, it's one of the most appreciated in the
South Italy.
Till 1950s each family of Matera manufactured home-made bread and cooked
it, for payment, in the public ovens scattered in the Sassi. Before baking,
each woman asked for marking the loaves with her family stamp, on which
there were the initials of the head, to recognize them.
